The Process of having your Boat painted

The Final Product shown directly below is a combination of Pen & Ink stippling and Water Color. Each Original is completed on a 22"w x 30"H sheet of Arches 300#, 100% cotton, Hot Press archival water color paper. When completed to your satisfaction the Original is yours and of course it is signed by Rick.

Step One

First I will need some high quality pictures of your boat, preferably the way you want it in your painting. Every boat is different in the details of electronics to how it is rigged. Below are some of the pictures used for this painting. At this point, before starting the sketch I require a 50% deposit on the agreed to price.

As you can see from the smallest details to the hull color and wood finishes, how important good photo's are in creating the art of your yacht. This boat is from California and this entire painting was developed through e-mails working with my customer throughout the entire process.

You will also notice that my customer did not want the davit located on the bow to be included in the painting. You are in control of all aspects of your painting.

Step Two

The first thing I do is a pencil sketch of the boat (shown below) which I then send to my customer for approval. These are generally rough sketches with a fair amount of detail to make sure that we have the boat in the right position to show it off. Once I receive approval on the boat layout we move on to step three .

Step-3

The final sketch including the fish and background as the customer envisions his or her art is completed. Steps two and three usually take about 2 weeks to complete working through the details by e-mail and digital pictures and telephone calls.

Step Four

Once the final layout is approved and color schemes decided I will ink in all the fine details and lay down the colors which usually takes another two weeks. Below is a nearly finished shot of this art.

Step Five

After reviewing the nearly final art with my customer I will finish the art by adding any additional details which I may have missed and deepening the color tones and contrast of the art (below)

Step Six

At this point with final art completed we have a high resolution scan of the artwork done and layout T-shirt designs as shown below. At the onset of the project I will provide you with apparel pricing for screen printing. This includes t-shirts long and short sleeve from standord cotton t's to pigment dyed shirts, sweatshirts etc. The minimum order for apparel is 144 pieces. Once the order is placed it usually takes 3-4 weeks for delivery of Apparel.

Step Seven

T-shirts and apparel are completed and Original artwork and Apparel are shipped to my customer. The printing process can take up to 3-4 weeks depending on the season.

Potential customers should allow 6-10 weeks for the entire process depending on season and work load.
